Holistic soil restoration by means of organic regenerative agriculture

Our approach promotes the restoration of biodiversity and soils, including carbon sequestration, by applying organic regenerative agriculture. To motivate this activities, we sell the products from this territory which are sustainable from ecological, economic and social perspectives, altogether aimed at improving the well-being of people inhabiting disfavoured rural areas. A first market test at the national and European level has been carried out successfully.
Technology validated in lab.
Basic technological components are integrated to establish that they will work together. This is relatively “low fidelity” compared with the eventual system. Examples include integration of “ad hoc” hardware in the laboratory.
Different scientific institutions like the University of Almería (UAL), the Estación Experimental del Zaidín (EEZ-CSIC) or the University of Utrecht are doing research activities on different farms with almond tress of our farmers. There is a special focus on the effect of ground cover under the almond trees and the application of different types of organic fertilizers like compost. A master thesis from the University of Utrecht has been recently finished which aimed to study the social acceptance and implementation of organic regenerative farming in our territory.

How does it work?

The Almendrehesa S.L. is a central point of stimulating organic regenerative agriculture creating a balanced productive ecosystem called ALMENDREHESA, which combines rainfed organic almonds with a large diversity of other traditional crops, along with the implementation of regenerative farming techniques like the use of special compost, hedges, ground covers, beekeeping, sustainable livestock grazing and sustainable water management. Also training courses are offered to farmers. At the same time, we open a marketing perspective for high quality organic regenerative products on the national and international market.
