The DPG contains dike profiles for every 100 meters of all primary flood defences. Profiles can be adapted based on local knowledge, then downloaded and imported directly into RingToets or Hydra-NL.

The Dike Profile Generator is being used already in projects performed by HKV for water management institutions. These projects can be regarded as relevant operational environments.

Recycle – Porous and Permeable Pavement Block

Recycle is a porous and permeable pavement block. It is mainly made of a recycled natural stone, porphyry, binded with small amounts of concrete. Its structure is porous, 15-20% empty spaces of the total volume, which allows high rates of permeability to water and creates no surface runoff. It is normally led down on a gravel layer that can store water and reduce the amount of water that flows downstream.

Testing plan completed
The testing plan and the BRIGAID’s Testing Innovation Framework (TIF) has been rightly applied and finished. The TRL of the innovation has been effectively reached.
Physical and mechanical features of the innovation have already been tested, and it is already in production and sold in the normal building market. However, the most relevant features able to reduce the urban heat island effect and counteract intense rainfall events are expected to come from the interaction between the block pavement and its underlying (soil and gravel) layers. This interaction has still to be tested in order to have accurate values to meet the standards and reach a green and climate-ready market.

How does it work?

Recycle is led down as a normal pavement block. As explained before, what is innovative is its structure that has continuous pores that cross the whole material and connect the underlying layers to the surface. This connection allows the built surface to mainly work as a natural un-sealed surface does, breathing air, water and heat through its structure. It is vehicle accessible and doesn’t need special maintenance. It is also effective in reducing freezing.

Bluebloqs is a visible, scalable and customisable solution to collect, treat and retain rainwater at building, street or neighbourhood level, making it suitable for uncoupling and aquifer storage and recharge for later use. This highly flexible and prefabricated system integrates bio-filtration technology and flow control in a modular product that can be easily applied alongside the curb in residential areas, in squares, industrial sites and parking lots. The system can be customised to the project specific water quantity and quality requirements.

The first working prototype system is currently being tested at The Green Village in Delft. We deploy our own large-scale 3D-printer to manufacture the 1:1 components to test the operational aspects of the system. Testing of the treatment efficiency includes the realisation of bio-filtration system in real size with a simulated infiltration well, along with 10 lab columns, which are monitored and analysed using different types of filter media and plant species, with different stormwater volumes and input concentrations.

How does it work?

FLOW CONTROL: With the Bluebloqs system run-off from roofs and streets is retained and slowly discharged, adding capacity to the current sewage system. BIOFILTRATION: Discharged runoff is treated through a combined slow sand filter and a vertical helophyte filter, for removal of sediments, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. CIRCULAR: Bluebloqs performs to optimally use rainwater for deep infiltration, irrigation or suppletion of open surface water. CUSTOMISABLE: The system can be customised in flow rate, filtration capacity, configuration and spatial functions to meet the project requirements. LIGHTWEIGHT: The lightweight prefabricated components enable quick installation on-site.

The Tubebarrier is a flood barrier that can be used to temporarily increase the height of a dike, to protect vital objects from urban flooding or to contain industrial leakage. The Tubebarrier is made of flexible PVC and fills itself with water. The shown model is 70 cm high with a front flap that is fixed with anchor plates. One segment is 10 meter and is stored in a box like an accordion. Segments are connected by zippers and can be quickly deployed over hundreds of meters by two persons.

Starting in 2013, the Tubebarrier has been subjected to theoretical analyses of failure mechanisms and validation in tests under design conditions at the Flood Proof Holland test site of TU Delft. This iterative process has lead to several improvements of components which has resulted in a reliable prototype. The latest improvements include universal anchor plates (for all types of surfaces) and zippers to connect segments. These will undergo further testing in Flood Proof Holland. If these tests are succesfull, testing will continue in operational settings (TRL6 and higher).

How does it work?

The Tubebarrier can be placed on soft (e.g., grass) or hard surfaces (e.g., concrete, asphalt). The flap can be fixed to the underground to prevent seepage /piping. The rising water enters the barrier through small holes on the front side. When the water level falls again, the water leaves the barrier through the same holes. The TubeBarrier can be bought or leased and Tubebarrier offers a 24/7 service including storage, maintenance and deployment in case of an incident or an imminent flood.

FireAd (Fire Risk Monitor Advisor)

The innovation FireAd is an ITC-desk solution able to regularly advice to forest and fire managers on windows of opportunity for forest management practices aiming at reducing the risk of wildfires. The tool generates maps of wildfire (or ignition) risk probability based on the retrieval and analysis of meteorological and drought indices (i.e. SPI), landscape metrics, and vegetation loads. The innovation helps forest and fire managers who want to keep the forest protected to select the best period for forestry practices.

Business plan completed
The BRIGAID Business Development Programme has been successfully completed. A MAF+ assessment has been conducted and its results have been enriched and incorporated into a business plan document.
The component related with the links between drought intensity and burned area were already tested within the project DROUGHT R&SPI; the links between fire spreading, land-cover and meteorological conditions were also tested and guidelines for prescribed fire are published for Eucalyptus and Pine plantations; only the combination of the various outputs for different time scales needs testing.

How does it work?

Forest management requires planning on a monthly/weekly basis. Wildfire management requires information at daily basis. We develop an approach supported by analysis of links between burned area, drought indices and fuel moisture to optimize the period of forest operations and reduce fire risk when in drought conditions. On regional/local scale, this information will be complemented with data on wind, air moisture and temperature to identify the best conditions for fire management actions, such as prescribed burning or backfire. Modelling will be done with few and publically available information, at different time scales and drought intensities allowing integration in Apps or platforms for drought monitoring or decision support in forest and fire management.
