TRL4. Laboratory testing of prototype component or process
The innovation is currently at TRL 4 due to the following reasons: 1. Existing Arduino-Based Prototype: We have already developed a functioning prototype based on Arduino technology. This prototype effectively measures air quality, validating the core concept and feasibility of the project. Its successful operation in a lab setting demonstrates the integration of essential technological components. 2. Advanced Design for Raspberry Pi System: While the Raspberry Pi-based system, a more advanced prototype iteration, is currently in the design phase, all preparatory work has been completed. This includes detailed design plans, selection of appropriate sensors, and software development strategies tailored for Raspberry Pi’s capabilities. 3. Extensive Field Expertise: Our team’s substantial experience in developing air quality monitoring devices forms the foundation of this project. Leveraging this expertise, we have a clear roadmap for advancing the Raspberry Pi-based system from its current design stage to a functional prototype. 4. Preparedness for Further Development: With the existing Arduino-based prototype as a proof of concept, the transition to a Raspberry Pi-based system is a planned progression. We have identified the necessary steps and resources required to build and test a more advanced prototype, aligning with the specific needs of the Black Sea Case Study. The project is at TRL 4 because it successfully demonstrated the basic functionality through an Arduino-based prototype. It is poised to develop a more advanced Raspberry Pi-based system backed by a solid foundation of expertise and a clear development strategy.

How does it work?

Integrating a versatile drone platform with advanced environmental sensors and GPS technology represents a leap in ecological data collection methods. This system enhances the quality and scope of environmental data and ensures efficient and widespread monitoring of air quality. It is particularly impactful for understanding the intricate relationship between air pollution and marine ecosystems, thereby informing sustainable management practices in the Black Sea region.

Smart Monitoring Technologies.
The project’s focus on smart monitoring technologies aligns well with the Black Sea’s objectives. The innovative combination of aerial drone deployment and remote sensing technology enables a unique approach to identifying and monitoring marine pollution sources. While it diverges from using autonomous submarines, the drone’s aerial perspective provides a novel method for understanding the atmospheric contributors to marine pollution. This approach is crucial for comprehensive environmental monitoring and offers a fresh perspective in addressing the complex ecological challenges in the Black Sea region.

Digital Solutions for Monitoring and Conserving Biodiversity
The system’s role in monitoring air quality contributes indirectly but significantly to biodiversity conservation in the Black Sea. Providing critical data on airborne pollutants aids in understanding the broader environmental factors that threaten marine biodiversity. This aspect of the innovation is particularly important considering the Black Sea’s unique biodiversity, which is threatened by various anthropogenic factors, including air pollution. The data gathered can inform conservation strategies and help develop effective measures to protect the region’s marine life.

Decision Support Tools for Integrated Planning
The innovation plays a supportive role in developing decision-support tools for integrated planning concerning the Black Sea ecosystem. While it does not directly incorporate AI-based forecasting or complex data processing techniques, the environmental data it provides are instrumental inbuilding comprehensive models for environmental management. These models and tools, fed with accurate and real-time data from the system, can significantly enhance cross-sector coordination and planning, thus contributing to the sustainable management and preservation of the Black Sea’s marine and coastal environments.

The innovation was developed independently, focusing on creating a solution tailored to the specific environmental challenges of the Black Sea. The consultation was sought from an environmental engineer with managerial experience in a relevant field, ensuring that the design considerations were environmentally sound and innovative. This collaboration helped shape a solution that is technologically advanced and highly relevant to the Black Sea case study, addressing critical environmental monitoring needs.

– Weather Dependence: The effectiveness of the drone can be limited by severe weather conditions. To mitigate this, the drone’s design includes weather-resistant features and operational protocols for adverse weather.
– Energy Reliance: Being solar-powered, the system’s operational capacity might be reduced during prolonged overcast conditions. Additional battery backup systems can be integrated to overcome this limitation.
– Data Transmission Range: The Wi-Fi-based data transmission is limited. Utilizing extended-range Wi-Fi or incorporating cellular data modules can address this issue.
– Sensor Calibration: Regular calibration is required for accurate readings. Automated calibration routines or remote calibration capabilities can enhance the system’s reliability.
