The EnCoFLow System is an innovative way to operate the biological stage of a wastewater treatment plant based on enzyme kinetic principles to reduce energy consumption and to improve the treatment quality by reducing nitrogen and phosphors.

Education and capacity building (Main River, Germany):
By implementing the EnCoFlow System at the WWTP Schweinfurt we were able to increase the capacity of the treatment plant, that means more wastewaters can be treated within the existing structure.
Water conservation and water use efficiency (Main River, Germany):
By implementing the EnCoFlow System at the WWTP Schweinfurt the treatment quality could be improved, that means the nitrogen and phosphorus concentration could be reduced. For the Main River, this means a significantly lower level of nitrogen and phosphorus pollution, which contributes to improving the water quality of the river.
Cross-sectoral approaches to resource management (Main River, Germany):
The EnCoFlow System at the WWTP Schweinfurt represents a holistic solution to improve cleaning performance and save energy, using enzyme-kinetic principles to optimize biological process engineering. This was implemented with control system, online measurement technology and other mechanical engineering components into a holistic system solution including process engineering support and education for the operators of the plant.
Independently from observations in operational practice and subsequent research projects as a step by step development process to a complete system solution.
Preconditions are: (according DWA A 131)- Municipal wastewater quality – Normal ph-value range- Normal salinity range- Normal retention time and sludger age in the biological tanks

The main components of the system have been tested separately, and an initial integration exercise has been conducted.
