The innovation engages diverse stakeholders—citizens, civil society, private sector, and authorities—in flood risk awareness and management through vulnerability assessments and crisis exercises using serious gaming. This approach improves flood prepare
Our innovation addresses the climate-related hazards of coastal floods, river floods, heavy precipitation, and sea level rise. It is designed to solve specific problems, including:
- Increasing risk perception of future floods
- Engaging all relevant stakeholders
- Educating the local community on climate change consequences
- Integrating local knowledge of vulnerabilities and capacities across sectors
- Increasing responsibility among stakeholders
- Engaging private companies in prioritization and investment decisions
See more information about this level and the TRL and SRL levels.
The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.
The actors beyond ‘the usual suspects’ are privileged in the innovation.
It is common that the authorities responsible for prevention and response in case of flooding oversee and neglect the insights, knowledge, conditions and situations of citizens and private companies, a pitfall which this innovation overcomes.
– The two workshops and exercises targeted at and prioritizing private companies and business will increase the social responsibility, understand the conditions for future investment and the need for incentives.
As a part of the NordForsk funded research project CliCNord (clicnord.org) the innovations different parts were developed to facilitate capacity building in small communities in the Nordic countries. First step of the innovation process was eight case studies of capacity building in relation to a variation of climate change related hazards in communities across the Nordic countries. The case studies focus on how the communities understand their situation in relation to climate change, how competencies and resources among the local citizen can help build capacity and finally on the circumstances regarding the citizen’s need for help from the established system and civil society organizations. The findings of these case studies created the basis for developing the proposed workshop and exercise concept. The concept was tested on four small Danish islands in relation to flood risk and in two remote villages on the Faroe Islands in relation to storms. Other innovations have been co-designed by the applicants in the LINKS project in 2023 (Horizon 2020 grant 883490). Though the project has had another scope, the team-members are experienced in developing innovations following the TRL principles, and have not least experience on how to disseminate this kind of innovations. If the participants don’t engage, and if the responsible authorities/the governance institutions do not prioritize the engagement of other stakeholders.
