The Kausal Platform includes Kausal Watch and Kausal Paths. Kausal Watch manages climate actions, and Kausal Paths sets goals and estimates impacts. Cities can update data through an integrated web interface.
Our solution is designed based on challenges that most of the local administrations face:
- Ambitious climate and other sustainability plans, but no clear management process-unclear responsibilities within the administration
- Actions in the plans are lacking targets
- Data collection is laborious and periodical
- Low visibility to internal and external stakeholders
- Evaluation and updates rely on static black-box impact assessment
- Difficulties in decision-making when it's not clear how the actions impact on the overall goal
Our innovation addresses the governance of climate risks.

We want to support the City of Athens with our Platform in their decision-making and improving the management of their climate-related plans. The Kausal Platform provides a comprehensive tool for administrations to manage, monitor and communicate theirsustainability plans and provide clear information of the status of implementation to decision-makers. The scenario module of thePlatform shows with clear visuals what is stilll needed to reach the overall goal of the city: to become climate-neutral by 2050. ThePlatform provides politicians with the opportunity to explore different scenarios, see the cost-efficieny of different actions – whichbuild the basis for better decision to reach the target as soon as possible.
The Kausal Platform was initially developed with EU funding from the Climate-KIC program within the City of Helsinki, as an attempt to manage their ambitious climate plan in 2018, where Helsinki encountered the challenges described above already. The first version of the solution was published in November 2019. This sparked a lot of interest among other cities, which led to the founding of the company in 2020 to be able to provide the support to cities all over the globe. Since then, Kausal has actively collaborated with cities, city networks, universities, and research institutes to maintain high expertise and turn new sustainability and decision support innovations into practical functionalities in the Kausal Platform. For example, Kausal is currently a technology partner in the EU-funded Climate-4-CAST research project about climate budgeting, coordinated by the HafenCity University in Hamburg.
The Platform works best when it is used actively, so an active usage of all relevant actors is needed to get all the benefits from the tool. This often requires an involvement process of all relevant departments/persons from the very beginning to ensure their motivation and willingness to cooperate on the sustainability work within the administration.
