We set out to solve the 'Nitrate Timebomb' - we ended up with a much bigger answer: phosphate recovery from waste water; sulphate recovery as sulphate of potash (reducing sulphate levels in fresh water systems, reducing eutrophication), quality high nitrate irrigation water, low nitrate potable water at close to the optimum level for human health and potentially a low carbon, zero waste option for Direct Potable Re-use. NTPlus drives increased food production, is climate change adaption for crops - and waste water treatment plant will become resource production centres, producing revenue.

Ion exchange is recognised as the best available technology for reducing nitrate levels in potable water, but it requires regular regeneration, producing a briney waste, which makes the process neither affordable nor sustainable. Regeneration is typically less than 10% efficient.
NTPlus is a completely new regeneration process which is almost 100% efficient. This means NTPlus uses KCl (potash) and ‘converts’ it to better nutrients, with no waste. Applied at a waste water treatment works, it replaces phosphate precipitation with phosphate recovery – enabling affordable compliance with the revised UWWTD.

We realised that the traditional view of ion exchange regeneration was not the whole story. This enabled us to take a completely fresh approach to regenerating resins. This is NTPlus – it’s transformational.
We are working on product concentration to enable incorporation into the liquid fertiliser supply chain for use in non-irrigated agriculture and also to ‘buffer’ all year round nutrient production at water treatment works with seasonal application on farms. We are also working on the required regulatory approvals, initially in the UK and US. Waste water treatment sites require pretreatment by UF and we are looking at integrating disruption of persistent organics removed by UF, which would otherwise be discharged. Very high sulphate levels require an additional pre-treatment step and the process replaces Fe dosing systems on waste water treatment plant.
