Our innovation focuses on green solutions to cool cities, especially in areas where conventional methods are limited. It creates urban shading through nature in otherwise unsuitable locations. The temperature reduction is due to both plant shade and evapotranspiration. Recirculating excess irrigation water and telecontrolled irrigation management prevent waste. This solution enhances the city’s capacity to protect vulnerable populations by introducing nature in urban areas where other solutions would take longer or be impossible. It helps mitigate the heat island effect and lowers temperatures under the shade provided by the system.
The solution has been designed as part of a Horizon 2020 project, called URBAN GreenUP.SingularRibbon is part of an intervention where Green Shades have been installed. These shades are textile awnings that accommodate a vegetated layer in their surface. As part of the irrigation system, we developed the ribbon, that has turned out to be a solution applicable to urban environments by itself.
The most important limitation is that the vegetation needs some months to grow, because it is a seeded system. The areas were the steel cables nets are allocated also needs time to be fully covered and provide considerable shade.The positive point of being a hydroponics system is that it can work under all circumstances, if the species selection is correctly done.

The business plan for this innovation has been evaluated by The Funding Company and it is considered to be ready for investment.
The main components of the system have been tested separately, and an initial integration exercise has been conducted.
