The innovation proposed here, combines the micro-station solution with that of autonomous drones to trigger the deployment of an autonomous drone over the area in question whenever flooding is detected by a micro-station.
- To alert in real-time local authorities and to support them in decision-making. As soon as a flood event is detected, the drones will automatically fly and take over the data collection to feed the online platform, providing local authorities with valuable real-time information during the event to better manage floodings situations.
- To monitor and better prevent flood risks in providing real-time data to local authorities but also in analyzing the past events to support urban planning development. Most of the time, it is difficult to obtain measurements during the peak of the flood. Nevertheless, these measurements are extremely important for understanding the phenomenon and better anticipating and managing it in the future. Our fully automatic, real-time solution enables recording these precious measurements.
- To enhance the time to action for the first rescue services as local authorities. By having access to the digital platform and receiving an early warning in case of flood, real-time water levels and real-time flooded area maps, can inform in the best delay the emergency teams. - To accelerate the recovery phase of the County.vorteX-io solution continues to provide water levels and real-time cartography data to support decision-making.

The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.
VorteX-io offers hydrological data as a service, thanks to two differentiators:
1) The Micro-Stations service: the service relies on the installation of lightweight, cost-effective, and easy to install micro-gauges which measure and transfer in real-time different water parameters (water levels, flow, images and videos) through GSM or Satellite Internet of Things (IoT) networks. 2) The scalable distribution model: a self-subscription service through an all-inclusive SaaS platform called “Maelstrom”: no need to buy the micro-gauges, vorteX-io sells only the access to real-time data and services (notifications, etc..). In addition to the existing recognized offer, vorteX-io continues to perform R&D activities to reinforce and improve the monitoring of extreme events, such as flash floods. As a matter of fact, the innovation we want to develop and test in close collaboration with Torbay and Devon County is the combination of the micro-stations (micro-gauges) network with autonomous drones. Micro-stations will provide hydrological monitoring while drones will complete the real-time assessment with resource allocations during flooding events. Drones will be automatically deployed as soon as a pining point, to be defined with the County, will be reached during a flood. The complete solution tested during the project lifetime will combine two different sources of in-situ data analyzed and deployed in a digital platform to the benefit of local authorities. The overall service delivered will be access via a digital platform to follow all water parameters of the rivers including a warning system in case of floods.
The micro-station service is the company’s core business, and main product. It is then an independent development. The drone system has been developed for the needs of space agencies in order to perform calibration and validation measurements of satellite altimetry measurements over rivers. The drone and the vorteX.io lightweight LiDAR altimeter have been developed and used many times to provide river ground truth for the calibration and validation of the ESA Sentinel-3 mission and the CNES SWOT missions over different rivers across Europe. Finally, the MAELSTROM platform has been developed independently and is also a complete part of the vorteX.io core business.
The micro-station system can be deployed on any infrastructure close to the river or, even better, crossing the river like a bridge. The system has been developed to be easy to install and to be totally autonomous in terms of connectivity and power supply.
The only requirements are:
– vertical point of view on the river (for good LiDAR measurements) ;
– distance to the water surface between 50cm and 20 m ;
– Need of an infrastructure to fix the system (bridge, wall, arm, pilar, etc…).
Concerning the autonomous drone, standard drone limitations are applicable:
– Max wind speed: 12 m/s ;
– IP55
