Focusing on developing alert system related to flood events on a specific area, Thales internal developments have led to the development and operation of a prototyped automated flood forecasting service.
This innovation is designed to provide :- A flood risk index on designated areas for a 5-day forecast with an hourly time-step - User friendly design and visualization of combination of occurrence probability and magnitude of flood events- Support to the scientific community and non-scientific stakeholders in the decision-making
See more information about this level and the TRL and SRL levels.
The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.
For the selected case, our tool is able to provide a regular river flood monitoring with an early warning alert. It can be calibrated on several locations along the river to monitor and alert on flood events. A 5-day forecasting will be available at any time, for every designated location, on a dedicated platform managed by Thales.
Our service has initially been developed thanks to internal Thales R&D funding. Throughout the development of the service, our team has been interacting with French research laboratories experts in hydrology (INRAE, University of Montpellier, BRGM) that advised us on the technologies to use and the functions to implement.
To be more effective, we need to have at least a few flow reports such as a measurement campaign to calibrate the hydrological model to each specific location we want to monitor. In addition, the performance of our forecast service can become better in case the number of historical flood events on the specific location is higher and more often.
