TRL6. Prototype system verified
Our innovation is at TRL 6 as it has transitioned from laboratory testing to a real-world operational test site in South Sardinia. The BlackBox IoT devices, developed by ELETICA SRL, have been deployed within the IntegrityKEY Platform for digital traceability. This deployment involved rigorous testing and validation in an agricultural environment, demonstrating the functionality and effectiveness of the technology in monitoring and validating food quality across the entire supply chain. The testing process included the use of advanced sensors, such as BME280 and LSM6DSL, to monitor environmental conditions affecting packaging integrity, handling practices, and digital traceability. The devices were seamlessly incorporated into food trucks and attached to food batches using RFID, Bluetooth Low Energy, and LoRa technologies. The real-world testing has provided valuable insights, feedback, and validation of the innovation’s performance, contributing to its readiness for broader adoption. While specific links to studies or test results are not provided here, detailed documentation and reports from the operational test site are available upon request, offering comprehensive insights into the testing procedures and outcomes.

How does it work?

The innovation, “Tracing Excellence: Unveiling Full Digital Traceability in the Supply Chain for ‘Made in Sardegna’ Products,”intricately weaves into the fabric of Case Study #9 in the Mediterranean Island, South Sardinia/Italy. It serves as a technological cornerstone addressing key objectives of zero waste, circular economy, certification branding, and consumer awareness.
In the realm of zero waste and circular economy, the innovation acts as a guardian against inefficiencies in the supply chain. By providing accurate digital traceability, it minimizes losses and aligns seamlessly with the principles of a circular economy. The real-time monitoring of environmental conditions and handling practices contributes to the development and widespread use of sustainable agronomic inputs, including organic fertilizers and amendments. The prevention of spoilage during transportation indirectly supports the case study’s mission for sustainable crop production.
The innovation becomes a linchpin in the certification branding and consumer awareness initiatives. It underpins the certification process, ensuring that products bearing the ‘Made in Sardegna’ label are backed by a comprehensive, verifiable data trail. Through consumer-facing apps, it empowers individuals with a transparent view of a product’s origin, journey, and quality assurance. This aligns perfectly with the goals of promoting certified products emphasizing quality, sustainability, and origin.
Quality assurance and sustainable practices find a dedicated ally in this innovation. The platform offers a robust tool for monitoring and certifying the quality of products at every stage, building consumer trust in certified items. Simultaneously, it actively contributes to sustainability by supporting the development of circular inputs and minimizing waste, embodying the ethos of the case study.
The innovation’s impact extends to the core of consumer trust and local identity. By providing transparency and verifiable information, it strengthens consumer confidence in the authenticity of ‘Made in Sardegna’ products. The platform becomes a narrative, showcasing the unique journey of each product from South Sardinia, thereby promoting and preserving the local identity embedded in the case study’s goals.

The innovation, “Tracing Excellence: Unveiling Full Digital Traceability in the Supply Chain for ‘Made in Sardegna’ Products,” was developed through a collaborative effort between ELETICA Srl and IntegrityKEY. ELETICA Srl, established in 2013, specializes in electronic design, firmware, and software, with a strong focus on research and development (R&D). The company collaborates with prestigious research centers, including the Polytechnic University of the Marche and the University of Camerino, fostering partnerships for innovation in various electronic sectors. IntegrityKEY, a spin-off from the Department of Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Sciences at Marche Polytechnic University, brought expertise in agricultural and environmental sciences to the collaboration. The partnership was formed to harness the potential of ELETICA’s BlackBox IoT devices in advancing the IntegrityKEY Platform for digital traceability in the food supply chain. This collaborative development approach leveraged the strengths of each partner — ELETICA’s electronic design capabilities and IntegrityKEY’s domain knowledge in agriculture and food sciences. The joint effort aimed to address the challenges in food traceability, combining technological innovation with a deep understanding of the agricultural supply chain. The collaboration ensured a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to the development of a robust and effective digital traceability solution for ‘Made in Sardegna’ products.

Limitations include:
Limited Connectivity: The effectiveness of the IoT devices, such as BlackBox, relies on connectivity. In areas with poor or no network coverage, data transmission may be compromised, affecting real-time monitoring.
Resistance to Adoption: The success of the innovation depends on the willingness of stakeholders in the food supply chain to adopt digital traceability practices. Resistance or hesitancy to embrace new technologies could hinder the widespread implementation of the solution.
Initial Implementation Costs: The deployment of IoT devices and the setup of the digital traceability platform involve initial costs. Small-scale producers or businesses with limited resources may find it challenging to invest in the technology, limiting its adoption.
Data Security Concerns: As the system involves the collection and transmission of sensitive data, concerns related to data security and privacy could pose challenges. Adequate measures need to be in place to address these concerns and ensure the integrity and confidentiality of the information.
Regulatory Compliance: Adherence to regulations and standards in different regions is crucial for the success of the innovation. Variations in regulatory frameworks or lack of standardized practices may impact its effectiveness across diverse geographical locations.
