Resiliants: WATER

Resiliants: WATER aims to create a predictive dashboard for avocado...

Eco Learn Prespa Ohrid

EcoLearn is a groundbreaking climate-adaptive education platform that responds to the pressing need for comprehensive awareness and capacity-building in the face of climate change, with a particular focus on water management and sustainability.

EcoLearn provides a comprehensive and integrated curriculum covering climate change, water management, and sustainability. This holistic approach ensures that learners gain a well-rounded understanding of the interconnected challenges and solutions related to climate resilience.
Curriculum is specifically tailored to the unique needs of the region, ensuring relevance and applicability.
EcoLearn employs interactive learning resources, including simulations, games, and virtual field trips, enhancing engagement and retention.

Our innovation addresses the climate-related hazards of droughts and heatwaves. It aims to solve the following specific problems:

- Climate change awareness gap
- Insufficient understanding of water management practices
- Lack of sustainable behaviors in local communities
- Limited capacity among professionals in climate-resilient practices
- Inadequate integration of climate education into formal curricula
- Fragmented community engagement in addressing climate challenges
- Absence of a comprehensive platform for continuous learning and resource-sharing in climate adaptation
- Ineffective collaboration between different sectors in optimizing water resource usage
- Low levels of recognition and incentives for sustainable practices
- Policy gaps hindering the adoption of climate-resilient strategies

Our approach integrates education, community engagement, and cross-sector collaboration to enhance climate resilience and sustainable water management.

TRL4. Laboratory testing of prototype component or process
EcoLearn is estimated to be at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) around 4 – Technology validated in the lab. This judgment is based on the collaborative efforts of the interdisciplinary team, curriculum development, and the integration of various components in a controlled setting. The team has likely conducted laboratory studies and experiments to validate the basic technological components, such as interactive learning resources and simulations. While the platform demonstrates progress in the development phase with the integration of ad hoc hardware in the laboratory, specific details regarding field testing, operational demonstrations, or integration into real-world scenarios are not provided. To reach higher TRL levels, EcoLearn would need to undergo further testing, potentially in relevant environments, to demonstrate its effectiveness and reliability. Comprehensive studies, test results, or links to validation data would provide more clarity on the innovation’s current TRL status. Achieving higher TRL levels will depend on the outcomes of these tests and the platform’s ability to transition from laboratory validation to more realistic operational environments.

See more information about this level and the TRL and SRL levels.

The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.

How does it work?

EcoLearn addresses water recovery, recycling, and reuse in the industry and tourism sectors, specifically targeting the Ohrid/Prespa Lakes region in Albania. This comprehensive education platform empowers communities and professionals to adopt climate-resilient practices, focusing on sustainable water usage and management. In agriculture, EcoLearn facilitates digital adaptation by providing farmers with interactive learning resources and training programs. These resources help farmers make informed decisions about sustainable practices, weather forecasting, and decision support systems. Additionally, EcoLearn promotes zero waste in agriculture by developing and spreading knowledge about innovative agronomic inputs derived from circular economy principles, such as organic fertilizers and amendments. By offering education and training solutions, EcoLearn empowers individuals and communities to address challenges in water management, digital adaptation, and zero waste in agriculture.

EcoLearn emerged through a collaborative effort, uniting educators, environmentalists, and technology experts to address climate challenges through education. The development process was driven by interdisciplinary teams committed to creating a comprehensive curriculum tailored to regional needs, emphasizing climate change, water management, and sustainability. Crucially, partnerships played a pivotal role in EcoLearn’s evolution. Collaborations with governmental bodies, non-profits, private enterprises, and local educational institutions enriched the platform’s development by providing diverse perspectives, expertise, and resources. This collaborative model ensured that EcoLearn not only aligned with real-world challenges but also facilitated its integration into formal education systems. The initiative’s commitment to inclusivity and collective knowledge is evident in its emphasis on building a robust network dedicated to climate-resilient practices. EcoLearn stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, showcasing how partnerships can enhance the quality, reach, and impact of educational innovations addressing the multifaceted issues of climate change.

EcoLearn’s effectiveness is influenced by access to technology, cultural sensitivity, community engagement, policy support, resource availability, and adaptability to evolving challenges. Limited technology access, insufficient cultural localization, low community participation, lack of policy support, resource constraints, and an inability to address emerging challenges can diminish the platform’s impact. Continuous efforts to enhance accessibility, cultural relevance, and community involvement, alongside policy advocacy and adaptability, are crucial for EcoLearn’s success in fostering climate-resilient practices.
