IRRIFRAME is Decision Support System for Farm Water Management aiming to ensure an efficient use of water resources in the agricultural sector.
IRRIFRAME is a decision-support tool designed to optimize irrigation practices at both farm and district levels, addressing key challenges related to droughts and heatwaves. It helps farmers determine the optimal timing, amount, and cost-effectiveness of irrigation, thereby mitigating water scarcity, managing heatwaves, and responding to rising energy prices. This innovation enhances the efficiency and sustainability of irrigation, offering a practical solution to the economic and climatic pressures on agriculture.
See more information about this level and the TRL and SRL levels.
The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.
If implemented in the Main River Basin in Germany, IRRIFRAME could boost the efficiency of crop irrigation tackling water savings from the local authority to the farmer, answering at the same time to the environmental issues related to waste resources. Not only are water savings achievable through IRRIFRAME, but also nutrient leaching due to over-irrigation is avoided. Further, IRRIFRAME’s water balance is coupled with a nutrient balance to allow fertigation. This would enable optimized crop production while minimizing the relative environmental impact.
Finally, the application of IRRIFRAME at the territorial level and its ingestion in IRRIBIGDATA (see companion ARSINOE application) can achieve effective management of drought and scarcity issues, while granting optimized water allocation in regular season.
IRRIFRAME is the fruit of over 60 years of research experience on irrigation management. Several projects both European (FP6 and 7, H2020 and HE) national and regional (EIP-AGRI of the Rural Development Programmes in Emilia-Romagna) have contributed to the definition of algorithms and parameters on which IRRIFRAME is based. The first versions of IRRIFRAME were issued in 2000, with over 20 years of R&D and refining on the user interface it is an ongoing project development to answer the growing demand for climate services and solutions to favour climate change adaptation.
IRRIFRAME is based on the water balance and algorithms developed to provide support for irrigation management. While crop parameters are available for over 90 crops, inputs are needed in terms of: (i) Environmental settings; (ii) Agronomic settings. To the former class belong soil characteristics, climate, weather forecast etc. In Italy the system has been developed to get such information, even without weather stations, thanks to the national open databases. To broaden its diffusion abroad, the connection to other databases (via API) or weather stations is needed. Speaking of agronomic settings, these include the plant density, precocity, type of irrigation system, etc. If the user aims to get effective decision support, he will need to be accurate in uploading information to the portal.
