The solution is a method for wildfire hazard analyses and forest fuel management planning. Forest fuels management implies a significant allocation of human and financial resources, so their planning should aim to optimize the effects on change of fire behavior due to the implementation of management measures. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the natural capacity of Mediterranean ecosystems to be resilient to fire.
Developed by GIFF Lda
Innovative method to planning and execution of Strategic Forest Fuel Management and Prescribed Burning techniques in forests to reduce risk of wildfire. Test
See more information about this level and the TRL and SRL levels.
The system’s main components have been individually tested, and an initial integration has been completed.
The proposed approach is based on studying fire patterns and fire regime in the areas of intervention, focusing treatments in locations where the effect will be greater, allowing the performance of suppression means safely and with greater likelihood of success, and use techniques to maximize the effectiveness of treatments in time, such as the use of prescribed burning or change of land use.
Limitations/conditions under which this innovation does not work or is less effective
A seminar for dissemination of planning action among firefighting organizations is rquired for an effective implementation. The successful implementation of this methodology is also dependent of the territorial scale required for its effective implementation.
Added value
A better application of resources to treat areas with high wildfire risk, by planning best placement of treatments, to improve wildfire suppression effectiveness. The solution proves effctive to reduce the extent of the area affected by wildfires.
